I'm honestly having a hard time wrapping my head around the lyrics. The music has a mournful quality and the lyrics are haunting. It is one of the best songs I have ever heard.
At the start of the song, it seems to be about a small glimmer of hope, which dies in the middle of the song and is reborn even more strongly in the form of determination at the end.
"But the children are doing fine, I think about them all the time, until they drink the wine, and they will, they will, they will."
The chorus seems to be stripping bare the human condition. We are born innocent and get more cruel and jaded as we grow.
Altogether an excellent song. I would like to thank The Pretty Reckless for an amazing performance and writers Taylor Momsen and Ben Phillips for their amazing lyrical talent.
"Everything's so f---ed up, the whole world," she says. "And the imbalance of power is so f---ed up. I mean, I don't want to get too in depth talking about what the songs mean because I like to leave it open to interpretation by the listener.
ReplyDelete"But, like, on the song 'House on a Hill,' you travel around the world and you're shocked how little kids can't eat and barely have a roof over their heads, and then there's a giant mansion on top of a f---ing hill with the people who own it all and rule it all." Taylor Momsen
